Does anyone remember the yellow packaged licorice fountains that you could get at the corner store 35-40 yrs ago. They were filled with white soda powder that would foam up in your mouth. You would dip the licorice in it and lick it off. I saw those the other day, they still make them believe it or not. Remember "Bar Six" much like a 'Kitkat' bar only better.
Or there was those funny little packages of 'sen sen' candies. They were tiny little black square candies that would just sit on your tongue; had a very strange taste, but really good just the same. My favourite was the coconut coated marshmallows from Gem plaza!!! (the store is long gone now but it was located just north of Steels on Young st; not too far from the "Red Barn"!!!) My mom would buy those marshmallow things for me every time we went shopping there just to keep me quiet. It really worked. I saw them the other day at Giant Tiger, I couldn't resist....they weren't nearly as good as they used to be.
I love cake too but only if it has the really sweet sugary icing. I figure if I'm going to gain 5000 calories in one sitting it better taste like it's worth it! I'm sitting here eating black balls, remember them? How black your tongue and even your teeth would get from them? They aren't quite the same anymore, not near as much mess. I think I liked my mouth being black, that was half the fun....showing everyone when you were finished! I have some of those red hot fire balls too! yum! I guess if I had to pick my favourite candy of all it would have to be caramel. Caramel of any kind. I love it! Oh and cheese cake....cherry cheese cake is my favourite dessert.
My son definitely got my sweet tooth, but my oldest daughter did not. She was the type of kid who would take one bite of her chocolate bar and put it in the fridge for later......this of course drove my son crazy! Every Halloween she would have to throw out her old candy so she could start on her new stuff! Thomas' candy would be gone in 2 days. That's my boy! Anyway I'll still be thinking about the candy for the next little while but that's about all I have to say about that......for now.

Oh man do I remember that stuff! There was a candy booth in Fairview Mall under the escalator that I would get black balls and fireballs from when I could.
ReplyDeleteThey cost a quarter for 5000 or something like that. :)
I found a store in Erin Mills Town Center about 2 years ago that has all of the old candy we remember. We stumbled on it when visiting Ontario. They had everything.
Except Popeye cigarettes. They were killed off as politically incorrect. They even had cigarette paper on them when we were little.
Those yellow fountain things were great but the Lik m aids were my favourite fizzy things. With the candy stick to dip. They are still around at Bulk Barn or somewhere. I saw them not long ago.
Are you sure about the Red Barn north of Steeles? There was one just south of Finch on Yonge on the west side but I don't remember north of Steeles.
Man do I miss that old stuff.
Hey Rhonda, go to http://gencat4.eloquent-systems.com/webcat/request/DoMenuRequest?SystemName=City+of+Toronto+Archives&UserName=RH+public&Password=123&TemplateProcessID=6000_11222_11222&MenuName=Image+search+screen and type in search words like "finch" and "yonge".
They have tons of cool old pictures in the Toronto archive.
I've been lost for hours in there.
